The theme of this year’s conference was Train Up a Child. We constructed it to help counselors, teaching professionals and parents who deal with the next generation every day. We brought in a variety of speakers to help parents raise godly children in a world that is increasingly moving against biblical standards and principles.

Description

Plenary Session 1: “What is Mental Illness?” Dr. Daniel Berger II
Few people today know where the concept of mental illness began in history. Fewer still understand the philosophical beliefs necessary to sustain the current construct. This session will discuss these foundational issues, study the key figures responsible for creating today’s mental health system, and in the process will equip the attendee with discernment to understand how secular theorists and much of American culture now determine who is normal and who is abnormal.

Plenary Session 2: “ The Insanity of Madness”  Dr. Daniel Berger IIToday’s prominent psychiatrists (who control and sustain the construct of mental illness) insist that normalcy and mental illness cannot be objectively determined or defined. Yet they assert that their constructs of human abnormalities contained in the DSM-5 should be believed and applied dogmatically. But if normal is subjective and imprecise, then how can deviances from a non-existent standard logically exist objectively? What if an objective definition does exist, however, and discovering its essential elements simplifies the concept of madness and exposes exactly why secularists cannot or refuse to objectively define normalcy and mental illness? In order to answer these questions, the original definition of madness found in Scripture will be compared and contrasted with the current accepted psychiatric theory. Specifically, the construct of schizophrenia/psychosis—what is claimed to be the most severe and complex form of madness—will be examined.

Plenary Session 3: “The Truth about ADHD” (part 1 of 2) Dr. Daniel Berger IIThe number of children being labeled as having ADHD and stigmatized as abnormal continues to grow rapidly. Controversy and misunderstanding surround the topic of ADHD, and despite technological advances, leading clinicians and theorists still lack valid answers to explain or remedy the mindsets and behaviors known as ADHD. No one on any side of the issue denies that children are struggling and misbehaving, but how those behaviors are perceived, interpreted, and addressed are regularly disagreed upon. The Bible offers a unique and reliable approach to interpreting and resolving the behaviors known as ADHD. This session will begin the discussion by addressing the underlying philosophies and history that have created the construct of ADHD.

Attendees will be able to better biblically discern what is actually taking place with children labeled as having ADHD and how to best help them, and also will gain general clarity on the psychiatric construct.

Plenary Session 4: “The Truth about ADHD” (part 2 of 2) Dr. Daniel Berger IIThis session will examine specific “criteria”/behaviors of the ADHD construct and use Scripture to discern whether each is a problem of fragility or depravity. It will also look at three common but false claims: that ADHD is a biological disease supported by empirical evidence, that ADHD is entirely a moral issue, and that ADHD represents a parent’s failure.

The Scourge of Pornography on Youth  Brent Campbell
I am convinced that pornography is the single most pervasive sin in our youth culture today. If your teen\child has a smartphone or has spent any time on the internet he has been exposed to pornography. If he plays online games he has been exposed to pornography. If she goes to the grocery store he has been exposed to pornography. If she watches television he has been exposed to pornography. The church and Christian parents have ignored this too long we must educate ourselves as to the best way to prevent this habitual sin of pleasure idolatry getting a grip on our teens and children, and ourselves.

Addiction-Proof Parenting Larry Ganschow
This workshop provides information on marijuana, opioids, and the drug culture that is permeating our society. There will be an opportunity for interaction with the speaker who is a substance abuse counselor.

Reactive Attachment Disorder I: A Biblical Understanding  Linda Rice
This workshop will apply a biblical lens to characteristics of children fitting the psychological labels, Reactive Attachment Disorder and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder. What does the Bible say about the self-esteem needs, inability to trust, and lack of a conscience? It ends with highlighting a couple of vital principles to start parents in the right direction.

Self Esteem Stephen Ganschow
The culture of today is focused on self. Self-esteem, identity, and individualism are some of primary buzzwords of this era. This is the type of education that our children generally receive in secular institutions. As Christians, how do we train up our children to view self, self-esteem, and identity through the eyes of God, and not the eyes of the world? This workshop will answer that question.

Session 5: “Understanding Autism” Dr. Daniel Berger II
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the most confusing human impairments in modern culture, yet more and more families are being affected by its reality. While autism is a valid neurodevelopmental problem, many children who simply have behavioral problems are too often labeled. In this session, we will examine autism more carefully in order to help those and their families who are genuinely suffering as well as to help eliminate some of the confusion surrounding false diagnoses that are occurring more and more. Some of the questions that will be answered are: what causes autism, how can it be treated effectively, how do we determine if a child genuinely has autism, how do psychoactive substances help these children, and how can we practically help families with a child diagnosed as autistic?

Parenting the Heart of Your Teen Larry & Julie Ganschow
This session will give practical and biblical help to parents raising teens in today’s world. The presenters will address common problems in parenting those this challenging and wonderful time of life.

How to Assess Child Safety Dianne Keech

Reactive Attachment Disorder II: How to Parent  Linda Rice
Based on understanding the label Reactive Attachment Disorder, we move into practical parenting in light of the fear, anger, and brooding that underlie control battles and other characteristics. When parents are first established in three important principles for themselves they will be better able to lovingly instruct and discipline their child according to Ephesians 6:4 in regard to desires, thoughts, and behaviors. We will make particular application to one characteristic to see how parenting principles can be applied in detail.

Session 6: “Teaching a Child to Pay Attention” Dr. Daniel Berger II
Many people have falsely come to believe that children naturally pay attention correctly and that they normally give their attention to the right objects/values. Yet, the Bible reveals in the book of Proverbs that a child’s paying attention rightly is a difficult task and one of the parents’ most important responsibilities. Furthermore, Proverbs offers a clear pattern of how parents and teachers can teach children to pay attention and to what they should give their attention. This session will provide an overview of how to teach a child to pay attention according to God’s created order. What is Mental Illness The Insanity of Madness Truth About ADHD SelfEsteem Understanding Autism Teaching a Child to Pay Attention Addiction Proof Parenting Reactive Attachment Disorder I – A Biblical Understanding The Scourge of Pornography on Youth How to Assess Child Safety Reaching the Heart of Your Teen Reactive Attachment Disorder II – How to Parent
