Biblical Counseling – The Difference

Biblical Counseling is unique because it is a type of counseling that solely relies on the Word of God as the only authoritative guide for all of life, fully sufficient to address what we are to believe, how we are to live, and how we are to address our problems.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Bible is unlike any other therapy or approach because of its scope and ability to address all that is “common to man.” No self-help book or secular counselor can boast of the measure of hope laid forth in the Scriptures.

The biblical counselor is trained to “rightly handle the word of truth,” in order to reveal the principles of biblical counseling in the counseling room. The biblical counselor does not base counsel on man’s wisdom, opinions, experience, or concepts of behavior, but instead looks to God’s own Word to see what God says.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:8-11

Biblical counselors desire to see the full range of biblical truth brought to focus on the counselee’s needs. As Hebrews 4:12 says, “…the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” This verse offers confirmation of the trustworthiness of Scripture.

Reigning Grace counselors are no exception. Our counselors are trained and certified by the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). We rely on God’s Word in the counseling room, and we offer hope from God’s Word alone to souls that are hurting

The Scope of Biblical Counseling

Biblical counseling addresses a range of problems confronting men and women, including:

  • Broken marriages
  • Parent-child relationships
  • Fear
  • Depression
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Tension, anxiety, and worry
  • Any problem that may result in mental and/or physical immobility

In short, the biblical counselor is equipped to face problems we have within ourselves, with others, and with our relationship to God. This is because “His divine power has granted us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence…” (2 Peter 1:3).
